Baguio City — Summer Capital of the Philippines
A brief history. In the first half of the 19th century, Baguio’s natural beauty and charm wasn’t too remote for the Spaniards to explore. The promising economic potential of Baguio motivated a series of Spanish expeditions. The Spanish colonial government had numerous encounters with fierce tribes before finally being able to establish authority in Baguio.
The Americans, too, discovered Baguio’s potential as a future city. They found a great source of water which carved and designed Baguio as the future summer capital of the Philippines.
In November 1900, the first civil government of Benguet was established. A rest and recreation camp, later known as Camp John Hay, was built in Baguio. On June 1, 1903, the Philippine Commission named Baguio the summer capital of the Philippines. Kennon Road was built 3 years later.
Baguio became a chartered city on September 1, 1909. Baguio prospered before World War II. Bombings destroyed Baguio but rose quickly from the ruins as a strong commercial and educational hub.
Baguio has always been a great mountain resort as Americans planned, and it maintains this reputation to this day.
